How do projects such as the OLPC fit in?

If your focus is on software for the people by the people, how do you see projects such as the OLPC fit in?

Query cheaper and free software?

Vinay,

What emerging-trend = software only-for the richest-people?

I've been on Linux for the last few-years , and the emerging-trend here is that hundreds of functions and utilities have been enabled FOR-FREE that would have needed a Prime-Ministerial salary only a few years ago.

The current state-of-play is that we now get the latest and newest functionality FOR-FREE, often before it is available to our Microsoft-brethren. I'm thinking of so-many commercial companies like Hewlett-Packard with their universal HPLIP-suite of empowering functions for  almost all of the HP product range, including more-economic low-cost multi-functional printers, and also HP/LaCie's contributions to LightScribe 12cm CD/DVD in both high-speed and full-sized professional-quality disc-labeling Linux-applications, even before the USA mob had access to them.

I have suites and applications that commercially-loyal users can only dream about, and the price for this functionality has been the cost of either a CD-R / DVD+/-R , or the download monthly-rental on my phone-line that I have to pay anyway!

If you are thinking in terms of HDCP and other restrictive proprietorial compulsory cost-imposts, then I am afraid you are probably correct , BUT the openness of the GPL and GNU, etcetera, together-with the spread of Linux throughout the planet, is generating an absolute wealth of applications, suites and resources that go a long-way towards readdressing that wrong, and hopefully, may even extinguish it entirely.

Vinay, almost forgot - If you are thinking in-terms of  customizing existing applications or suites to suit local requirements, then you should know that because the source-code for almost-all Linux-applications is free and open-source, there are already hundreds and thousands of customizations out-there that may already do the job required, but even if the task needs serious customization or even an entire new creation to be generated, there are literally hundreds of open-source programmers who would jump all over you to get their name attached to your project. Just detail the nature and requirement of the project a little tighter, and you should have no-end of responses, but there is a fair chance the requirement already has been met within the existent bank of applications and suites.

Barry.
